About Sri Mayapur International School
“It is necessary for the leaders of the Krsna consciousness movement to start educational institutions in different parts of the world to train children, starting at the age of five years. Thus such children will not become hippies or spoiled children of society; rather, they can all become devotees of the Lord. The face of the world will then change automatically.”
Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder Acarya of ISKCON,
Srimad Bhagavatam 4.12.23 Purport
In the hopes of fulfilling Srila Prabhupada’s vision, the airy classrooms of the Sri Mayapur International School (SMIS) were established on the property of ISKCON’s Sri Mayapur Chandradoya Mandir in 1988. Set amongst flowering trees and surrounded by winding garden paths and playing fields, the school has now grown to shelter nearly 200 children from the ages of 3 to 18, hailing from 30 countries around the world.
With a teacher student ratio of less than 1:15, the children of SMIS get plenty of attention from their 40 devotee teachers and support staff, who use a combination of Srila Prabhupada’s books and standard textbooks written by professors in their fields. Academic studies- ranging from English, Math, Science and Technology to Humanities, the Arts and Sanskrit- culminate in an internationally-recognised diploma from the Cambridge International Examination Board, enabling those who wish to do so to continue their studies at university.
Our SMIS children thrive in the spiritual atmosphere established by Srila Prabhupada. They attend temple programmes daily and take part in community festivals, kirtans, parikramas, and the annual book distribution marathon. At school, they relish the visits of ISKCON leaders, learn Vaisnava bhajans and play musical instruments. By their final year, they will have completed a course in Gaudiya Vaisnava philosophy, learnt Vaisnava etiquette, studied the Srimad Bhagavatam, and can graduate with a full Bhakti Shastri degree.
